American doughnut brand Krispy Kreme has reopened its first production site this week to serve those who are working on the frontline against coronavirus.
The company recently took to social media to announce they will be providing free doughnuts to essential workers, including NHS staff, as a thank you for all their hard work.
Half a million Original Glazed doughnuts will be delivered contactless to hospitals, police stations, carers and other local heroes.
Krispy Kreme previously closed its manufacturing sites two weeks ago in order to follow government guidelines and add new measures to ensure production is safe for staff and customers.
The brand has introduced social distancing at every step of manufacturing, appointing Covid-19 officers to oversee the process and implementing a contactless delivery process.
The company’s factory line in Watford is set to reopen this week, but staff including the Krispy Kreme CEO have already delivered thousands of Original Glazed doughnuts across London and the north to south eastern counties. This will extend to become nationwide by April.
Richard Cheshire, Krispy Kreme CEO, said: "Our mission to create smiles and bring joy has never been more important.
"We know we aren’t saving lives, but we hope to do something as small and simple as making someone smile.
"It’s our way of saying thank you to people far and wide who are working so hard to keep our nation moving, safe and well at the moment."
The much-loved doughnut brand is also planning to recruit who are keen to support from afar by delivering doughnuts to heroes in their local area.
The volunteers will be chosen from its active head office and operations staff, but Krispy Kreme is also inviting the general public to support the cause from their own home by nominating local unsung heroes who will receive a thank you in doughnut form.
