CHICAGO _ Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant missed his third consecutive start Thursday night against the Brewers as he recovers from a beaning.
Bryant, who was drilled Sunday by a 96-mph pitch from German Marquez of the Rockies, remains under evaluation and was examined by team doctor Stephen Adams before taking batting practice.
The Cubs lineup featured a twist, with Kyle Schwarber batting second and Javier Baez third for the first time this season. Victor Caratini started in place of catcher Willson Contreras, who was 5-for-9 lifetime against Brewers starter Chase Anderson.
Schwarber did his part by smacking a home run with one out in the sixth to give the Cubs a 1-0 victory and snap the Brewers' eight-game win streak.
Schwarber's homer was his seventh of the season, and his 17 RBIs are second to Baez's 24.
Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks scattered four hits through seven innings to earn the win, and he didn't walk a batter for his second consecutive start.
Hendricks was supported by exceptional defensive plays by center fielder Albert Almora Jr., first baseman Anthony Rizzo and Baez at second.
Carl Edwards Jr. and Brandon Morrow pitched the final two innings.
