Kris Boyd urges Rangers to stop ‘churning players’ and build proper structure

Rangers hero Kris Boyd has issued a scathing assessment of his former club’s recent direction, warning that without a clear structure in place, the Ibrox side will continue to fall short of domestic success.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox, Boyd highlighted the instability that has plagued Rangers since Steven Gerrard’s departure in November 2021 — with five different managers, including interim appointments, taking charge in less than four years.

With the club set for major changes both on and off the pitch this summer — including an expected American takeover and the arrival of new sporting director Kevin Thelwell — Boyd believes it is crucial Rangers stop the revolving door of managerial and player turnover.

“It’s a big problem for Rangers,” Boyd said. “A new manager has come in and they’ve given him the keys to the castle to go and sign their type of players. All of a sudden, a year or 18 months later he’s out the door — but these players are still there.”

The former striker, who made over 200 appearances across two spells with the Light Blues, was critical of the club’s lack of long-term planning and contrasted Rangers’ scattergun approach with Celtic’s more consistent model.

“Rangers need to put a structure in place,” Boyd continued. “Look at Celtic — Brendan Rodgers, potentially, the last time left because he wanted to bring in players and strengthen the group. But Celtic weren’t budging from their model.

“Rangers have just allowed whoever comes in to spend money. But for me, there needs to be a proper structure put in place so whatever manager comes in, it’s irrelevant. They coach the players, they do their thing, but the club has a structure that allows it to flourish.”

With Barry Ferguson currently serving as interim boss and Rangers destined to finish the campaign trophyless, the pressure is mounting for the incoming regime to halt Celtic’s recent dominance.

“You can’t keep this turnover of players, churning out player after player,” Boyd added. “There needs to be a structure that works not only short-term but long-term so this club can flourish again.

“Right now, they were in the latter stages of Europe and singing ‘we’re still in Europe’ and all that — but it’s embarrassing really. You’ve got to start winning domestically.”

The spotlight now turns to Rangers’ hierarchy and Thelwell’s first major calls in what promises to be one of the most pivotal summers in the club’s modern history.
