Kris Boyd's controversial claim blows up in his face as in steps Manchester United legend

Kris Boyd claimed there are no great players in Scotland.

Then in walked Paul Scholes.

Boyd was one of a host of former and current stars at the Oriam as the SFA held another coaching course.

The former Kilmarnock and Rangers striker caused a stir when he dismissed the standard of players in the country when on duty for Sky at the weekend.

If he didn’t regret his words at the time he may well now after rubbing shoulders with Man United greats Scholes and Darren Fletcher as well as all-conquering Celtic skipper Scott Brown and Rangers coach Michael Beale in Edinburgh.

They were just a few household names to speak about the art of midfield play to those looking to gain their UEFA licences.

Scholes said: “Malky Mackay invited me up to Oriam to share knowledge with the coaches in Scotland.

“During the day I tried to pass on as much knowledge as I could while looking at some clips of when I played.

“Coaches are so crucial for the development of players. They are what made me a footballer. Guys like Eric Harrison, Nobby Stiles, Sir Alex Ferguson and Steve McLaren all made me the player I was.

“There are so many great Scottish coaches. It’s a massive footballing country and they definitely produce quality coaches so hopefully the session helped them improve their knowledge base.”
