Kris Boyd responds to Leigh Griffiths gesture as Celtic star is told to focus on himself

Kris Boyd has hit back at Leigh Griffiths and told the striker to focus on his game instead of worrying about him.

The Celtic striker gestured at the Sky Sports pundit after scoring his side's second goal of the game after comments made by Boyd in previous weeks.

But the Rangers legend reckons Griffiths needs to forget about what people are thinking of him and just get back to scoring goals on a regular basis.

Griffiths did miss a large chunk of the last 12 months due to personal problems that led to him taking an extended break from the game.

The goal tonight was the Scotland striker's second goal in two games after he also netted against Partick Thistle at the weekend.

He shushed Boyd after scoring in response to the former Kilmarnock frontman's comments that he had a month to save his Hoops career.

The signing of Patryk Klimala left many feeling he might be pushed further down the pecking order but Griffiths has started 2020 in fine form.

And Boyd believes he is proven right in his previous opinion by the stats around Griffiths' playing time over recent seasons.

He said: "I’ll go back to the Ross County game when I said I thought he had four weeks to save his career. It looks as if he has knuckled down and worked hard.

"But he doesn’t need to prove to me. When I look at stats, and I’ll go with stats because you can’t argue with them. Brendan Rodgers was appointed in 2016 at Celtic Football Club. We had heard the professionalism, the standards, the training levels went through the roof. I’m doing him a favour here because I’ll only include league games. There’s been 135 league games played, Leigh Griffiths has played 34 of them.

"That suggest to me that you’re not doing it on the training field. You don’t need to prove it to me. You don’t need to come to me and have a go at me to appease the Celtic fans, go and do it for yourself, because there is no doubt there is a talented footballer in there.

"Steve Clarke is standing here tonight, would he love to select Leigh Griffiths? Of course he would. Never mind coming for us, go and do it for yourself. Perform on the pitch, score goals on a regular basis and actually get back to the level he should be playing at."
