Kris Boyd provides verdict on key Rangers vs Celtic selection call

Kris Boyd reckons Cyriel Dessers has to start for Rangers against Celtic.

The forward was an unused substitute in the humiliating 6-0 loss to Club Brugge in Champions League qualifying on Wednesday.

However, Boyd reckons Russell Martin should start Dessers against Celtic after experimenting with Thelo Aasgaard in a central striker role.

Speaking to Best New Bingo Sites, Boyd said: “That decision will be made once the manager sees who gets through the game against Club Brugge midweek.

"However, I don’t think Thelo Aasgaard playing in the false nine worked at all against St Mirren at the weekend, so I don’t think we will see that again.

"There are rumours that Dessers might be back fit, and I think if that is the case, you have to play him.

"It’s a key position for Rangers at the weekend, they need a strong performance from whoever plays up top on Sunday, as chances may be hard to come by.”

Asked whether a heavy defeat to Celtic would cost Martin his job, ahead of the Brugge defeat, Boyd said: “All Rangers fans will be looking forward to it, and a win on Sunday would buy Russell some grace.

"Despite finishing a long way off Celtic last season, Rangers still managed to perform well in the derbies. These performances matter because once you feel like you can beat Celtic, it’s much easier to start beating the other teams in the league, and those are the matches that drag you closer to them.

"Then Rangers vs Celtic decides who wins the title.

“Sunday is a huge game to gauge where the players and manager are at, but even if they lose, I can’t see them sacking Russell Martin."
