Kris Boyd pinpoints how many signings Rangers need this summer

(Image: PA)

Kris Boyd believes Rangers need as many as six new signings before the beginning of the new season.

The Ibrox outfit struggled last term after the split and did not have the strength in depth to compete for the league title in the latter stages. That hurt Danny Rohl's side and ultimately cost them in a third-place finish.

Derek McInnes, the new Rangers manager, understands that will not be acceptable this year but he will be given the money to bring in reinforcements to help the club challenge.

Lawrence Shankland has already arrived while centre-half Ben Godfrey is poised to land a season-long loan deal this week. Ross McCrorie has also been snapped up before pre-season kicked off.

But former striker Boyd reckons the Light Blues will need more new faces to push for silverware this season with some of the current crop also looking likely to leave including Nico Raskin who has big-money suitors.

"I think if you go back to last season there were performances where you thought Rangers were good enough to go and win the league," Boyd said on the Warm-Up. "But they came up really short after the split.

"Celtic found a way. I think there's five or six players Rangers need.

"They've already brought in Lawrence Shankland, there's been rumours that Nico Raskin has been subject of a bid from Hull City who were promoted to the Premier League so I don't know how that will materialise.

"Derek said he won't be going for any Hearts players under contract. Does that mean Hearts players out of contract he can go for? Cammy Devlin is one of note that is out of contract.

"I think there will be change at Rangers this summer."
