Kris Boyd names Rangers and Celtic stars in team of the year including James Tavernier and 'breath of fresh air' Kyogo

Rangers legend Kris Boyd has named his Scottish Premiership team of the year - featuring three Ibrox stars and Celtic players apiece.

The league is bursting with quality up and down the division with the top six especially as strong as it has been in some years.

Hearts sit third as we enter 2022 and that's reflected in Boyd's defence and in goals with Scotland stars Craig Gordon and John Souttar picked in his XI for a rock solid defensive effort.

Souttar is joined by Celtic newcomer Cameron Carter-Vickers and Dundee United's veteran centre-back Charlie Mulgrew.

In a 3-4-3 formation, Boyd names three Rangers men across the middle four with captain James Tavernier at right wing-back, joined by midfielders Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo.

Electric Parkhead loanee Jota plays on the left with free scoring Kyogo Furuhashi in front of him.

And rounding off the attack are Martin Boyle and Tony Watt, who currently leads the league in goals for Motherwell.

Boyd picked his team for Sky Sports and he said: "Joining Tavernier in midfield is Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo. Glen comes in just ahead of Callum McGregor who has also had an excellent season so far but his team-mate at Celtic Jota would come in on that left-side and has already shown this season how dangerous he can be from there.

"My front three features players from three different clubs. First up it's Martin Boyle who has been excellent for Hibs. The versatility and flexibility he has is really impressive, he can play up-front, right wing-back and right midfield - he's done really well this season.

"Motherwell will be gutted if they lose Tony Watt. It wasn't so long ago he couldn't get a game and now we're speaking about him getting back in the Scotland squad. I think that shows how well he has done in the opening few months of the season.

"And finally, Kyogo who has been a breath of fresh air since he came to Scottish football.

"His movement has been first class and his finishing has been really good as well. The impact he's had has probably kept Celtic within touching distance of Rangers as there have been a lot of games that have been tight and he's been able to find that opener or winner."

Boyd's team of the year (3-4-3):

Goalkeeper: Craig Gordon (Hearts)

Defenders: John Souttar (Hearts), Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic), Charlie Mulgrew (Dundee United)

Midfielders: James Tavernier (Rangers), Joe Aribo (Rangers), Glen Kamara (Rangers), Jota (Celtic)

Forwards: Martin Boyle (Hibs), Tony Watt (Motherwell), Kyogo Furuhashi (Celtic)
