Kris Boyd makes Celtic case for out of favour star and lays into popular pair who are 'miles off it'

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd believes part of the blame for Celtic's ropey start to the season must lie with the club's full-backs - and made the case for former team-mate Greg Taylor.

Boyd played alongside Taylor after making his return to Kilmarnock, the club where the left-back made his name before a £3m move to Parkhead.

He's since been replaced by Diego Laxalt in the side and the Uruguayan struck an added-time equaliser against Hibs in Saturday's 2-2 draw that handed the Hoops' rivals over at Ibrox a further title advantage.

But Boyd believes Taylor has been criticised by supporters while Laxalt and right-back Jeremie Frimpong are being given a free pass despite leaving their team-mates for dead.

He said on Sky Sports: "I know I played with him but I keep hearing Greg Taylor get stick off the Celtic fans for his defensive performances. When I look at the two Celtic full-backs right now, they're miles off it.

"And the centre-halves have been the guys who have been criticised at Celtic but the big thing for me, they've got no protection from the full-backs, they're away up the pitch, and they don't do their jobs.

"Yes, Celtic can look at it and say they got back into it and they left Easter Road with a point, and it was a good point at the end of it, but at the start of the game, Celtic ... it's not good enough from their point of view.

"And Neil Lennon is under pressure, yes."

Mulgrew agreed that the boss will be feeling the heat now - but issued a pointed reminder from his Parkhead career to show there's a long way to go until May.

He said: "There's a lot of pressure but we've been there before.

"I remember we were 3-0 down at Kilmarnock and we came back, and that was the changing point.

"Rangers played Dundee United that afternoon, and if they'd won we'd have been 18 points behind, and we got the draw in the last minute and Rangers drew that afternoon.

"We ended up winning the league by a distance - we went a point ahead on boxing day - but Celtic need to start winning games and winning consecutively, there's no doubt about it."
