Krakow is best-value winter getaway with flights, hotel and food among Europe's cheapest

The best-value winter getaway destinations have been confirmed after costs of a break were analysed to find the locations where visitors get more for their money.

Vehicle rental outfit Discover Cars studied the average cost of hotels, flights, car rentals and tourist attractions, as well as what there is to do and see.

The firm looked at 10 European capital cities, and used Google Flights to record the top 10 round-trip prices from London Heathrow to the destination's nearest airport. Expedia was used for hotel prices and TripAdvisor, to find the number of affordable restaurants.

Krakow in Poland took the top spot with the cheapest average overall weekly cost at £335.33. Car rentals are the cheapest in Krakow at £141.56 and there are 664 affordable restaurants - whilst the city’s most known attraction of the Rynek Glowny (old town square), is completely free.

The Czech capital Prague was second with its 1,207 affordable restaurants and the most known attraction of Prague Castle costs an average of just £8.40. Car rentals are more expensive at £202.25 - but other costs are cheaper than average at £120.25 for a flight and an average week costing £388.80.

Paris was third with an average weekly cost of £746.67 ut other elements gave it added value. Car rental will cost around £184.90 and the city is home to 2,934 ‘affordable’ restaurants, with flights costing an average of £118.88.

The most well known attraction, the Eiffel Tower, costs an average of £22.22, with 7,829 other attractions also on offer.

For those with a bigger budget Vienna was a recommended option, while the Danish city of Copenhagen offered least vale for money, according to the study.

Aleksandrs Buraks, at DiscoverCars.com, said: “We’ve all had a difficult time, and holidays were the one thing many of us were really missing. Even as restrictions eased locally across countries, international travel has only just become a real option for people.

“To help everyone really enjoy themselves and relax this winter, we wanted to share a cheap and easy way to travel. Hopefully they agree with us that these ten cities are the best budget winter getaway destinations.”
