The government plans to launch seaplane services between tourist destinations along the Andaman coast, with trial flights between Krabi and Phuket expected later this year.
Deputy government spokeswoman Lalida Persvivatana said the initiative forms part of efforts to improve transport links between major tourist destinations and strengthen Thailand's tourism and aviation sectors.
She said Deputy Transport Minister Phattrapong Phattraprasit recently visited Krabi International Airport to monitor operations and discuss preparations for the project with government agencies and private-sector representatives.
The service is intended to provide a faster and more convenient transport option between popular coastal and island destinations. Krabi has been selected as the pilot province for seaplane operations because of its strategic location and tourism potential.
Mr Phattrapong said the ministry plans to develop Krabi International Airport as a gateway linking travellers with nearby islands and coastal attractions.
The ministry is establishing a committee comprising government agencies, aviation experts and private-sector representatives to develop operating guidelines and ensure compliance with aviation safety standards.
Mr Phattrapong will chair the committee.
