When you’re late to the game and everyone else is talking about how good something is, you might think that it cannot be possible as “great” as people make it out to be. With KPop Demon Hunters, all those people praising it are right. It really is that good.
The new animated film from Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans tells the story of three hunters who use their voices to try to stop demons from breaking through the veil and stealing the souls of people on earth. Rumi (Arden Cho) is the lead singer of Huntrix and has a secret she doesn’t even want to tell her fellow hunters and group members: She’s part demon herself.
Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) have been with Rumi on their journey to fame as KPop singers but the three are also hunters. The lore is that Gwi-Ma, the ruler of the demon realm, continues to try to steal souls from the world of the living but throughout history, three hunters have used the power of song to keep Gwi-Ma and his demons at bay.
But Rumi, Zoey, and Mira are on the brink of something special, they change turn the veil that protects the world golden and keep Gwi-Ma and his demons trapped forever. But Gwi-Ma has plans: Form his own KPop group with the Saja Boys. And it forces Rumi to come to terms with her own demon heritage and being honest with her chosen family.
I am someone who loves a good musical moment and KPop Demon Hunters has given fans some of the best songs of the year.
Yes, it really is that good
Like I said before, a lot of the time when you hear people praise something and you haven’t yet watched it, you get skeptical. That’s why it took me so long to watch KPop Demon Hunters and then I haven’t stopped listening to it since. It’s addictive in the best of ways and why not rock out to a great new animated musical soundtrack to close out the summer?
I think what makes KPop Demon Hunters special is that the film is about love and acceptance. Rumi has to accept who she is, both Mira and Zoey have to love the parts of Rumi they don’t know, and even the Saja Boys have to come to terms with who they are as demons and it all ends up being a really great message for audiences of any age.
And look, if you found out your favorite music artists were also demon hunters, that’d be pretty cool, right? The movie weaves in references to their demon hunting ways, has some pretty incredibly side characters, and is just one of those movies that you can show younger audiences and enjoy yourself as well. Yes, you will cry but hey, that’s the beauty of a good animated film! It makes you emotional.
So if you were on the fence about watching KPop Demon Hunters, don’t be. It is worth you time and your Spotify Wrapped this year.
