Kostas Tsimikas jets in as Liverpool close in on first transfer of the summer

Kostas Tsimikas has flown in to complete his Liverpool medical ahead of a transfer from Olympiacos.

The Reds have agreed a deal with the Greek club for Tsimikas and the highly-rated left-back arrived in the UK on Sunday to prepare to put the finishing touches on a switch from his homeland.

Liverpool had drawn up a four-man shortlist that included Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly and Real Madrid's Sergio Reguilon, but moved quickly for Tsimikas after two bids were rejected by Norwich for Jamal Lewis on Thursday.

An opening gambit of £10million was firmly rebuffed by the Canaries before thoughts turned to Tsimikas after a second offer of £12m was turned away.

It is believed sporting director Michael Edwards met with Olympiacos general director Lina Souloukou ahead of Greek side's clash with Wolves in the Europa League on Thursday night at Molineux.

Sources close to the player have claimed a deal worth close to £15m has been agreed, although Anfield insiders insist the fee is below the £12m mark. It is thought a 20 per cent sell-on clause has been inserted to bring Tsimikas to Anfield.

And Tsimikas is now Merseyside-bound as he gets set to undergo a medical this week ahead of a move to the Premier League champions.

Personal terms, as of Sunday evening, had yet to be agreed but such discussions are not thought to be an issue as Jurgen Klopp closes in on his first signing of a truncated summer.

The Reds moved on to the 24-year-old after Norwich refused to budge in their valuation for Lewis.

With the Canaries negotiating a £22m fee for James Maddison two years ago, sporting director Stuart Webber was unwilling to drop below what they view as as the going-rate for their top talent.

It is understood Lewis ticked all the boxes for Klopp and his staff, and he was viewed an ideal fit for the Reds squad in terms of character and ability. However, the club feel there is better value in the European market.

Liverpool insiders have pointed to Everton's £17m capture of Lucas Digne from Barcelona as evidence and it is thought that the Reds fended off interest from a string of other clubs including Napoli, Sevilla and Leicester City to win the race for Tsimikas.

Tsimikas has been on Liverpool's radar for the best part of three years with scouts first alerting club staff to his potential as they checked on Pedro Chirivella during his loan spell in the 2017/18 season with Willem II.

The Greek international was a regular in Olympiacos' Europa League campaign this term, featuring against both Arsenal and Wolves as well as Tottenham in the group stages of the Champions League.

The defender will provide Andy Robertson with some senior competition for the left-back role at Anfield for the first time since Alberto Moreno left the club in the summer of 2019 on a free transfer.
