Korey Smith on lockdown life and how Bristol City are keeping the team spirit alive

Togetherness in a dressing room is often seen as the vital ingredient that can help turn a good team great, as the collective desire to play for each other helps drag every last inch of performance from players.

As Bristol City have been recounting the finest moments of the decade on official club channels during the coronavirus lockdown, that intangible quality was most apparent in reliving the 2014/15 Johnstone's Paints Trophy final win.

"The good guys" - as close off the field as they were on it, who also went on to secure promotion into the Championship in emphatic fashion.

Korey Smith is the last man standing at BS3 of that side and, as captain, now has an additional responsibility to cultivate a sense of team spirit but ho do you do that if each member of the squad is confined to their houses or apartments.

Not only can the current situation be damaging for the overall fitness levels and match sharpness of professional athletes but it's totally removed the daily camaraderie that helps make a team, a team.

In an interview with Gregor MacGregor on this week's Robins on the Wire podcast, Smith explains how City's coaching staff are working overtime to keep the players fit and focused on the task ahead - even if the future of the Championship is uncertain.

While the midfielder also details the care and attention from each player in maintaining communication and competition among them, especially for the individuals who are living on their own, such as Niclas Eliasson, many miles away from their loved ones.

"It's hard, I can't lie, just like everyone else you want to be doing what you love and seeing the people you love," Smith said. "We're in such a good and exciting position and for it to be put hold, is quite hard.

"You do miss that banter when you're at home. Some of the boys jump on the PlayStations and the xBox. I've played some of the lads at FIFA and Call of Duty, that's nice for an hour. We're all trying to stay in touch.

"Hopefully we'll be able to finish the season and it's important we stay in touch and keep that banter flowing so we're all ready to call upon in those final nine games.

"Conditions are hard but we can't complain, we're all healthy and the people who are going through the hardest things are in the hospitals and on the front line."

You can listen to the episode in full HERE as Gregor and Michelle Owen also discuss the financial implications of the shutdown, contracts and season cards.
