‘Korean Zombie’ isn’t happy about his placement in the UFC rankings

Fresh off his big finish of former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung is baffled by the UFC’s ranking system.

Since coming back from his almost four-year layoff from MMA in 2017, Jung (16-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) has won three of his last four, scoring first-round knockouts in all three of those wins.

His first-round TKO over Edgar in his last fight at UFC on ESPN+ 23 landed him in the No. 4 spot in the UFC featherweight rankings, and “The Korean Zombie” believes he should be higher. He took to Instagram to let that be known.

“One gained victory over an 11th ranker, and another hadn’t fought in 13 months. This ain’t a voting system for popularity I’m number 2. 🤦‍♂️ #ufc”

Jung is referring to his original opponent for UFC Busan, Brian Ortega, who was forced out due to injury, and hasn’t competed since his loss to then 145-pound champ Max Holloway in December 2018. Jung also is commenting on Zabit Magomedsharipov, who’s coming off a unanimous decision win over Calvin Kattar last month in Russia.

After defeating Edgar, Jung proceeded to call out newly crowned UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski for a title shot.

But with Volkanovski recently undergoing hand surgery, Jung, who’s challenged for a title once before, may have to wait for another crack at gold.

In the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie featherweight rankings, which includes all major promotions, Jung’s victory over Edgar vaulted him up seven spots from No. 15 to No. 8.
