Korean proverb of the day and its lessons: 'If you don't walk today, you must run tomorrow'

“오늘 걷지 않으면 내일 뛰어야 한다” (Oneul geotji aneumyeon naeil ttwieoya handa) is a Korean proverb that roughly translates to “If you don't walk today, you must run tomorrow.”

The proverb conveys a simple message about consistency, discipline and taking action before it is too late. It suggests that when we postpone small efforts today, we may be forced to make a much greater effort later to catch up.

A lesson in everyday life

The idea applies to almost everything- health, education, work, finances and personal goals. A person who exercises regularly may avoid having to make drastic efforts later. Similarly, studying a little every day can prevent the pressure of trying to cover an entire syllabus just before an examination.

In the workplace too, delaying a small task can turn it into an urgent deadline. What could have been handled calmly today may require much more time and energy tomorrow.

Why small steps matter

The proverb does not literally suggest that everyone should walk or run. Rather, “walking” represents steady progress, while “running” represents the extra effort required when we fall behind.

Its underlying lesson is that progress does not have to be dramatic to be meaningful. A small step taken consistently can be more valuable than a huge effort made only when circumstances leave no choice.

In a world where people often postpone tasks in the hope of finding more time later, the Korean proverb offers a timely reminder: start today, move at your own pace, and you may not have to rush tomorrow.
