Korean golfer gets 3-year ban for flipping off a noisy spectator

South Korean golfer Bio Kim overcame a disastrous drive in the closing holes of the DGB Financial Group Volvik Daegu Gyeongbuk Open this weekend to pick up his second victory of the season on the Korean, but his profane reaction to a spectator after a crucial shot earned him a three-year ban.

While leading the tournament by one shot with three holes to play, Kim was distracted by a fan’s camera during his drive at the 16th. His shot flew just 100 yards, but he was able to hold on and win the tournament, and later apologized, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Unfortunately for Kim, the current KPGA money leader, officials reacted to his moment of frustration with an extreme penalty.

On Tuesday, Kim kneeled in front of television cameras as he fought back tears and apologised again after attending an emergency KPGA meeting over his action.

But the KPGA later said it had reached a unanimous decision to suspend the golfer for three years from the Korean tour with a fine of 10 million won (US$8,350).

“Kim Bi-o damaged the dignity of a golfer with etiquette violation and inappropriate behaviour,” it said in a statement.
