Administrative and regulatory reform minister Taro Kono has been appearing on TV programs every day to urge young people to get vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.
Kono has appeared on programs broadcast by Nippon Television, including one on Sunday. He appeared on two other programs each on Monday and Wednesday.
"There are cases in which young people become seriously ill, so it's better for them to proactively get vaccinated to prevent aftereffects," he stressed on a program of TBS on Wednesday.
On the same day, Kono told a Nippon TV program, "False rumors about the vaccine were flying around on social media, so we have to be very aggressive in disseminating [correct information] through the internet and social media."
Even in other countries where vaccinations have progressed further than in Japan, inoculation rates among young people have lagged. This has been attributed to the fact that even if young people got infected, their condition was not likely to become serious.
