Kong: Skull Island director nearly killed during nightclub attack in Vietnam

Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the director of Kong: Skull Island, has shared a harrowing story regarding his close brush with death in a Vietnam nightclub

The filmmaker's experience is detailed in a brand new GQ profile as well as the ensuing investigation he launched to find the attackers.

It occurred shortly after production wrapped on 2017 film Skull Island which was released to critical acclaim last year. He reveals he decided to depart Hollywood for Saigon and was enjoying his new life there until the attack occurred in XOXO nightclub on 9 September 2017.

Vogt-Roberts was brutally beaten by up to 10 men who repeatedly punched him, kicked him and smashed a champagne bottle over his head.

The director, who had been appointed as the country's first American-born tourist ambassador, suffered a fractured skull, haemorrhaging and a cerebral air pocket and was left traumatised by the incident of which there is video footage.

Having been warned off from investigating his attackers, Vogt-Roberts - with the help from the article's author Max Marshall as well as Canadian authorities - identified a suspect who has since been apprehended for another crime. The rest of his assailants are at large.

The director proudly tweeted the story with the message: “This year has been a journey. Whether you’re reading about this for the first time or have been there with me from the beginning... I want to thank you for your support in my life - especially to the people of Viet Nam who consistently inspire me. Onward!”
