Vincent Kompany agrees with Roberto Martinez on Albert Sambi Lokonga as Arsenal seal transfer

Vincent Kompany and Roberto Martinez have lauded new Arsenal recruit Albert Sambi Lokonga, as the Gunners make their second signing of this summer's transfer window.

Lokonga, 21, has joined Portuguese left-back Nuno Tavares in making the switch to the Emirates Stadium.

The Belgium Under-21 International made 27 league appearances for Anderlecht this season, during which time he scored on three occasions, while he also provided two assists.

On national level, the highly sought after midfielder is a regular for the Red Devils' Under-21 side and received his first senior call-up in March.

Although he wasn't included in Belgium's squad for Euro 2020, the 21-year-old was seen as a talented prospect, and that's exactly why the north Londoners moved in quickly to secure his services for the future.

It is understood that manager Mikel Arteta was a big admirer of the player, and directly was a big driving factor in pushing the club towards concluding this deal swiftly.

But he isn't only the Spaniard who rates Lokonga so highly.

Now ex-manager Kompany and current Belgium boss Martinez have agreed that the Gunners' new recruit has limitless potential going forward in his career.

Speaking to Voetbal Belgie, the ex-Manchester City defender endorsed his young star back in February.

“With his qualities at his age, he stands out for me,” Kompany said.

“Will Sambi win his duels? Is he improving his defensive work? You ask yourself these questions as a coach. Well, I’ve seen him make a lot of progress in that area.”

In February, Kompany predicted Lokonga could even have a chance of representing Belgium at Euro 2020 and tipped him for a big move in the summer.

“Who knows, Sambi may even make the national selection for the European Championship. It would give him a chance to secure a top transfer in the long term – hopefully not too early,” he said.

Despite his absence from Euro 2020, the ex-Wigan manager knows Lokonga's time will come to excel and show his qualities on the world stage.

"He has made huge strides since March," Martinez said in June.

"I see Sambi Lokonga as a shadow player of Axel Witsel."

He added: "He's still young, but when he's ready, he's ready. I'll see soon."

There's undoubtedly always a risk with signing younger players when it comes to adjustment time and other factors, but with Arteta's record in promoting youth and academy products, this acquisition should really excite Arsenal fans looking ahead to the upcoming 2021/22 season.
