Former Nippon Professional Baseball pitcher Satoru Komiyama, who also spent time with the New York Mets, will become the varsity team manager at his alma mater Waseda University in January next year, the Tokyo university said Wednesday.

Komiyama, 52, is a former ace pitcher and captain at Waseda.

He was the first draft pick in 1990 of the Lotte Orions, the predecessor of the Chiba Lotte Marines, of the Pacific League.

Komiyama was the league leader in ERA in 1997.

After playing for the Mets, he returned to Japan in 2004 for a second stint with Lotte and retired in 2009.
