KOLKATA: A pump at water tank No. 3 crashed early on Wednesday, creating problems in supply in some areas of Salt Lake Sector I, comprising BMC wards 40 and 41. Last week, Salt Lake Sector II faces similar issues after a leakage occurred in the pipeline of tank No. 5 booster pumping station.
“One of the main pumps of the tank stopped working. We continued water supply operations by bringing in two standby pumps. However, there were some disruptions in supply at few places. Repair work is expected to be completed by Thursday,” said a BMC water supply department official.
Consumption of water has increased due to the summer heat. “There are some households in our block where the water pressure was very low. We hired water tankers to meet the daily needs,” said resident Krishnendu Chaudhury.
An official of a private organisation that supplies water tankers, said, “We have two water tankers of 6,000 litre capacity each. They are making nearly nine to ten trips per day. ” Dipanwita Bakshi, a resident of BL block said, “We face this pro- blem every year and have to collect water from the tankers. With more people settling in Salt Lake the overall water consumption has increased,” said Civic authorities have advised residents facing water issues to clean up their respective ferrule lines.
