Kolkata traffic comes to standstill

KOLKATA: Yet another rally, this time by the DYFI-SFI, the youth and students' wings of CPM, at Esplanade virtually brought Kolkata to a halt with vehicles getting stuck for about three hours near PTS and Rabnindra Sadan in the south, Rajabazar in central Kolkata and Maniktala in north. The morning rain only added to the morning woes.

With CR Avenue-JL Avenue and AJC Bose Road-APC Road witnessing pressure due to rallies coming from Sealdah, Howrah and Kalighat, cops said that the only north-south corridor that remained available was the EM Bypass.

With the rallyists choosing a little after noon to begin their political programme, school students and shoppers were the worst hit.
