Kolkata: Strand Road may reopen on Wednesday after road repairs

KOLKATA: KMDA has completed the first phase of Vivekananda flyover demolition on Strand Road. But this stretch that is crucial for trucks to access the wholesale market in Burrabazar and Posta will take some more time before it is opened to traffic as the road surface needs to be repaired.

With KMC starting work on Saturday, it will take a few days for the pockmarked road to be repaired. Keen to get the road into use at the earliest, Kolkata Police has asked KMC to finish the levelling work at Strand Road by Tuesday so that it can be opened to traffic by Wednesday.

Police have suggested they will stop traffic movement at night to allow KMC to do the asphalt work. Police had planned to open the road to traffic by Tuesday but Monday being a holiday on account of Janmasthami, no work may get done that day.

According to traffic police, unless the section of Strand Road reopens, the entire Posta area may witness major snarls. While MG Road is already facing traffic snarls, the closure of Vivekananda Road from Ganesh Talkies means there are no alternative routes for vehicles bound for Howrah bridge and Strand Road.

KMC sources said the road repair work was affected due to rains. “KMDA vacated the entire stretch and removed all equipment on Saturday. We are filling up the holes that were dug on the road to fix and support the equipment. We will then concentrate on levelling the road,” said an engineer there.
