Kolkata: Sector V turns template for rest of Salt Lake to get rid of cable mess

KOLKATA: Overhead cable mess can be spotted in various parts of Salt Lake while in adjacent Sector V, the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) has completed almost 80% of the work to come up with underground cable ducts.

With the newly elected civic representatives to form the new board of councillors of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a few days, the civic body is planning to take up the issue of cable mess across Salt Lake.

The residents of Salt Lake rued that almost all the major thoroughfares and streets are marred with such cable mess — many of the wires have been lying unused there for a long time. Often, after heavy rains or storms, the wires get snapped and hang on dangerously touching the ground.

“Overhead cable mess is everywhere across Salt Lake. It is very dangerous and risky for people like us who ride bikes. It becomes difficult to spot the snapped wires from a distance after sunset. The civic body should look into the matter seriously,” said Kawshik Dutta, a resident of BD block.

In Sector V, the work to set up the underground duct has been going on for the last two-three years. “Only 20% of the work is left to be done. We hope to wind up the work by this year to make Sector V free of cable mess completely,” said an official of NDITA, which has floated tenders recently to set up three more underground cable ducts on the stretches from Infinity building to Plasto Chemical, RDB to Fishery gate; from RDB to the bicycle stand towards Oxford building, Saila Tower to Pinkan Building and from Dr JJ Medical to Arena Animation.

BMC chairperson designate Sabyasachi Dutta said that he would place a proposal over the removal of the cable mess in Salt Lake to the new civic board.

BMC mayor designate Krishna Chakraborty said, “ Earlier, we had discussed the issue and will take up the matter again to come up with a solution.
