Kolkata: Posta flyover likely to be razed by August-end

KOLKATA: The dismantling of Vivekananda Road flyover, which had collapsed during construction, is expected to be completed by the end of the month. Pointing out that the razing of the last 200m from the Malapara junction towards Posta market remained, a KMDA official said two deck slabs and four girders had to be pulled down.

"We have set a target of last week of August to complete the dismantling," he said.

Officials said a detailed project report was being prepared for a 6km flyover, proposed to be built from Strand Road to Ultadanga. The flyover, if sanctioned and built, will reduce travel time from Howrah to VIP Road to about 15 minutes. According to the proposal, the flyover will be built from Ultadanga and it will go over CIT Road, Kankurgachi, Maniktala and Vivekananda Road before ending at Posta market on Strand Road. There is also a plan to have an arm from Kankurgachi towards Bengal Chemical. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,000 crore.

"If implemented, the city will get a north-south fast link, similar to Maa flyover in central Kolkata," said an urban development official.
