Kolkata: Pay-cut protest at Salt Lake school, parents hit the streets

KOLKATA: Teachers and guardians of a play school in Salt Lake’s BD Block demonstrated outside the school gates on Monday demanding immediate resumption of physical classes after it had closed last week just a day after reopening.

Teachers at the school said that the authorities had asked them to take a 50% pay cut as physical classes began from April 5, to which they protested and refused to join work.

As a result, there were no teachers on April 5. The school attendants had handled the 175-odd students for a day after the authorities suspended classes for two weeks.

“We want the authorities to sort out their differences with the teachers and resume classes as we have already paid the session fees and the children are looking forward to resuming physical classes,” said the mother of a three-year-old child.

Started in 1980, the school is one of the oldest Montessori schools in Salt Lake and the neighbourhood.

It is very popular among residents of Salt Lake for several years and admits children of age groups of 21 months to 5 years to five classes — PG, lower nursery, transition, upper nursery, KG I and KG II.

TOI tried to contact a senior functionary of the school but she disconnected the calls, refusing to speak to any media representative.
