Kolkata Municipal Corporation set to install bins in hawking zones

KOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will install waste bins in hawking zones dominated by food hawkers. The move is prompted after repeated complaints of food wastes being dumped on the road, resulting in clogged drainage system, said member, mayor-in-council, Debasish Kumar.

According to Kumar, the food hawkers would be made aware of the dos and don'ts about food wastes. The KMC solid waste management department will also conduct a drive against rampant use of plastic. "Let the monsoon get over, we will start a drive against use of plastics in major hawking centres. This leads to fire incidents in several parts of the city," said Kumar.
