Kolkata: Mayor to write to state govt on death certificate norms

KOLKATA: City mayor Firhad Hakim will write to the state health department to simplify the procedure to obtain copies of death certificates.

KMC councillor Tapan Dasgupta on Saturday brought a resolution at the KMC monthly meeting for making issuance of death certificates simpler under the centralized online system. Deputy mayor Atin Ghosh conceded that under the new system introduced on May 30, getting additional copies of death certificates was difficult because the system was demanding stricter documentation.

As per new rules, applicants will need to produce either Aadhaar card, voter card, passport or Khadya Sathi card of the deceased. “It is becoming increasingly difficult for an applicant to submit documents of the deceased. Residents are being refused certificates as they are failing to produce such documents for someone who had died three decades ago,” said Ghosh.
