KOLKATA: A couple was thrown off a two-wheeler on Maa flyover on Thursday when a manja struck their faces after getting entangled in the wheels. The incident took place around 8.25am near the AJC Bose flyover-Maa flyover link at Topsia near Park Circus Crossing. The two were saved by a whisker as vehicles behind them swerved at the last moment.
Rajeswar Prasad Banerjee (42) and Durga Banerjee
(37) were injured in the ankle and knee. Durga also received injuries on her chest. The couple from Dum Dum was heading back home at the time, police said. The East Traffic guard police sent the two to hospital before allowing normal traffic flow on the flyover.
“It seems the manja didn’t injure the riders much as their helmets and masks acted as protection. But Rajeswar lost concentration and fell near bridge number 4,” said an officer from Beniapukur PS.
The incident is among the dozen-odd manja accidents reported on Maa flyover since the pandemic broke. The long stretch between Parama Island and the Seven-Point crossing has become particularly dangerous with over 90% of manja accidents being reported from here.
The Kolkata traffic police top brass have reintroduced a five-man cop team to keep an eye such cases on the flyover.
“We have requested KMDA to set up poles and proposed use of nets along the entire Maa flyover stretch,” said DC (traffic) Arijit Sinha.
