KOLKATA: The trading zone in the Burrabazar area will return to a semblance of normalcy with the stretch between Posta crossing and Nawab Lane being opened early next week.
The movement of goods had been disrupted here due to a portion of Strand Road being cordoned off for demolition of the Vivekananda flyover. “KMDA has assured us that this section will be handed over to us by early next week,” said a senior Lalbazar officer. Six girders on this small section have been pulled down. Piers 12 and 13 will be demolished later.
Opening of the stretch will give handcarts access to the trading hub in Posta-Burrabazar. A dozen vehicles can be parked now, solving Burrabazar’s long standing parking issues. “Loading and unloading of onions will start once KMDA removes the barricades as trucks to the onion mandi park here. The garlic and ginger mandis too will get respite,” said a traffic cop.
The preliminary work for the second part of the first phase, between Old Mint and Nawab Lane, has already begun. The PWD is confident that Phase I will be over by August 15. The focus will shift to Phase II which will cover the Girish Park-Ganesh Talkies stretch.
