KOLKATA: Only light vehicles were allowed on the left lane of the Ruby-bound flank of Bypass near Metropolitan crossing on Friday after fresh cracks were noticed in the area where subsidence had taken place on Monday. Buses and garbage trucks used the right lane.
Police said that RVNL has started on the repairs and work is expected to be over some time on Saturday.
The switching of lanes caused a bottleneck and led to traffic crawling along the stretch. There were snarls that extended a kilometre, till the Chingrighata approach.
The situation worsened in the evening when IT and ITeS staffers began returning home and over 280-340 vehicles hit the Bypass per minute. “The situation was not as bad as Monday, but it took a bit longer than usual to cross the stretch,” said Satanjoy Patra, who crossed the stretch twice on Friday.
The spot, near Metropolitan canal bridge, saw cops regulating traffic on two lanes instead of three.
