KOLKATA: Five persons — four of them from a family — received severe burn injuries in a gas cylinder blast in the Port area on Monday evening.
Among the injured is a gas mechanic who had been called by the family to repair the cylinder once they realized that gas was leaking from it. The incident was reported from Ekbalpore Lane around 6.30pm. Two women and a minor girl were also injured. The police and fire brigade said that residents of the area also helped them in rescuing the injured family members.
The injured persons were identified as Sultana Begam (48), Faizan Ahmed (21), Nafisa Begum (24), Mehrin Nisha (14) and mechanic Prasanta Nandy. Nandy’s injuries are more serious than others’. “Nandy is being taken to SSKM by his relatives for treatment. The room in question has been kept locked by forensic experts,” said DC (port) Zafar Ajmal Kidwai.
