Kolkata: Drink-drive charge slapped in Bypass crash

KOLKATA: The Dhandania family in New Alipore cannot believe that their mother, Minu Dhandania, who had safely landed in Kolkata from Hong Kong, was killed on the way home, despite no fault of hers. Minu, her husband, Devkishan, and two sons had returned from a weeklong holiday in Hong Kong and were headed to their New Alipore home, when they met with the accident a little after Thursday midnight. A luxury saloon car, being driven by a 33-year-old man, Rahul Kedia, allegedly drunk, rammed into the sedan. Cops slapped drink-driving case on Kedia, among other charges.

The incident led Lalbazar traffic top brass to call an emergency meeting on Friday. Multiple accidents, including this one, came under special review. “Devkishan who sustained multiple injuries on his head and rib cage is back home from a hospital in Salt Lake. He is not in a condition to go to the crematorium. His two sons aged 20 and 18 years had a close shave with minor injuries. We know the family for many years. They are dealers of a leading two-wheeler company and we have never seen them flout traffic rules,” said a neighbour of the family who did not wish to be named.

The accused driver Rahul Kedia has been charged under IPC Section 304 (part II). Additional charges of mischief, attempt to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash and negligent driving and drink-driving have also been slapped on Kedia. If convicted, he can be sent to jail for 10 years.
