KOLKATA: Continuing their campaign against a Diwali free of unsafe crackers, Bidhannagar Police organised a procession with 600 odd policemen, school children and local drivers on New Town roads spreading the idea of “Green Diwali Safe Diwali” and pleading residents to celebrate an eco friendly Diwali free of fireworks, fumes and noise.
"The bursting of firecrackers not only causes pollution but is also detrimental to the health of people. We have been pleading with people to avoid fireworks and celebrate the festival with diyas, candles and other eco friendly products that leave minimum carbon footprint," said a senior Bidhannagar official.
Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Gaurav Sharma who inaugurated the programme and led the walk also interacted with children who participated in a sit and draw competition arranged by Bidhannagar Police as he suggested ways to the children to celebrate a cracker free Diwali.
Sharma also launched a series of newly designed and white colour coded police bikes -- Traffic Rakshak - for all traffic units for effective visibility and uniformity.
