Kolkata: Authors, poets form guild to protect rights

KOLKATA: A large number of writers and poets in the city have joined hands to form the Authors’ and Poets’ Guild that will be launched on Monday.

The founders claimed nowhere else in the country did writers and poets have an association that looked into their interest and gave them protection. The guild will be registered as a society.

“Authors and poets face issues, like copyright violation and non-payment of royalty. Even very famous authors have been denied their dues but there was no formal organisation to help. With this guild, authors and poets will have a platform that will strive to protect their rights,” said author Debarati Mukhopadhyay, also the general secretary of the guild.

Among the authors in the committee are, Nirbed Roy, Tapan Bandyopadhyay, Swapnamoy Chakraborty, Saikat Mukhopadhyay, Dipanwita Roy and Tridib Chattopadhyay. The Guild will also be their platform to attend book fairs.
