Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike on Wednesday called for residents of Tokyo to refrain from nonessential outings during the upcoming weekend as the capital set a new record for the number of infections with the new coronavirus in a single day.
"Tokyo is at a critical point for overshooting," Koike said during an evening press conference, referring to the possibility of explosive growth in the number of infections.
She also asked residents of Tokyo to work remotely on weekdays, and not to go out in the evenings. The governor cautioned against gatherings in which even small numbers of people eat or drink together.
On Wednesday, 41 people were confirmed to have contracted the virus in Tokyo, surpassing the former daily record of 17 set on the previous day.
