Kohli hurting after India's Test collapse

Skipper Virat Kohli (r) has struggled to describe India's emotions after their Test capitulation. (AAP)

A deflated and defeated Virat Kohli is struggling to make sense of India's capitulation to Australia in the first Test.

The tourists were bowled out for their Test record-low of 36 in their second innings on day 3 in Adelaide on Saturday before Australia romped to an eight-wicket win.

"It's very hard to put those feelings into words," said Kohli, who will return to India for the birth of his first child and miss the remaining three Tests.

"We had a lead of 60 when we arrived today and just collapsed completely.

"It's very hard to find words to express how everyone is feeling in the changerooms.

"It really hurts."

The Indians have more worries besides losing Kohli ahead of the second Test starting in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

Paceman Mohammed Shami has been sent for scans on his left arm amid fears of a broken bone when struck by a Pat Cummins delivery.

Shami retired hurt amid the horrendous batting crash - no Indian reached double-figures, just the second time in Test history that has happened in a completed innings.

And opening bat Prithvi Shaw is under pressure to retain his spot after being bowled twice in near-identical fashion when making a duck and four in Adelaide.

Kohli implored the tourists to summon some fighting spirit in response to their humiliating second innings.

"We lacked intent," he said.

"The way we batted allowed them to look more potent than they probably were because they bowled similar lengths in the first innings as well and we batted way, way better."
