KYOTO -- An illumination event began on Friday at Kodaiji temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, despite similar events being canceled at local shrines and temples due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The event, which is being held in the temple's Hashintei garden and is scheduled to run through May 6, features a replica of Matazo Kayama's "Oboro" painting of a weeping cherry tree in full bloom.
Measuring 1.7 meters high and 3.6 meters wide, the painting gives visitors some idea of what the temple's own weeping cherry blossom tree looks like when in bloom. The temple's cherry blossoms are expected to be at their peak by late March.
An illumination event is also being held at the neighboring Entokuin temple.
The events at both temples start at around 5 p.m. and the last entry is at 9:30 p.m.
The admission fee at Kodaiji temple is 600 yen for adults and 250 yen for junior and senior high school students, while at Entokuin temple it is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for junior and senior high school students. Elementary school students are free of charge at both temples.
To prevent the spread of the virus, sanitizers will be available at the reception and staff members will be wearing masks.
The Kodaiji temple display was supervised by local gardener Yasuo Kitayama,71.
