Uttar Pradesh sailor found dead with bullet injuries at Naval Base in Kochi

KOCHI: A 19-year-old sailor was found dead with bullet injuries at Naval Base, Kochi, early on Tuesday morning.

The unmarried sailor, hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh, was found dead at one of the security posts along the boundary wall of the Naval Base, where he was on guard duty.

"The youth was found dead in one of the watchtowers near a school in Kataribagh. Though it is suspected to be a case of suicide prima facie, we are yet to find whether he accidently pulled the trigger of the service rifle he used," said police sources.

The police sources added that another personnel, who was on rounds duty, found him lying unconscious with bullet injury on his head.

"More investigation needs to be done and we are waiting for post-mortem report," said police sources.

Naval sources said that the deceased joined Navy last year.

A statutory board of inquiry is being ordered by the Navy.

A case of unnatural death has also been registered with the Harbour police.

The body of the deceased is currently kept at INHS Sanjivani hospital and will be shifted to Ernakulam General Hospital for post-mortem later.
