Kochi: Speeding tanker rams police vehicle, two held

KOCHI: A tanker carrying septage rammed a parked police vehicle in Palarivattom in the early hours of Tuesday, causing heavy damage to the SUV. The incident reportedly happened around 1am when the police patrol team tried to stop the speeding tanker at SN Junction in Palarivattom.

One of the policemen had a narrow escape from being hit by the tanker as he managed to jump out of the way. The truck driver and cleaner were arrested by the police immediately. Police said the tanker rammed a nearby wall after colliding with the police vehicle belonging to Maradu station. They were booked under IPC Section 308 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

Sources said that the team from Maradu police was on patrol rounds in the area and they received a message from the city police control room that a speeding tanker was heading towards Ernakulam from Edappally.

“Though we tried to stop the vehicle showing hand gestures, the tanker did not slow down and came straight at us. It would have hit me if I had not jumped out of the way. The vehicle stopped after it hit our vehicle and a nearby wall. Though the accused tried to flee, we chased them down,” said Maradu SI Rijin M Thomas. tnn
