Kochi corporation authorities decides to remove dangling cables soon

KOCHI: Kochi corporation authorities have decided to remove all the dangling cables which pose threat to pedestrians and motorists. A meeting convened by mayor M Anilkumar decided to take a slew of measures to address the issue on Monday.

At the meeting, mayor asked all telecom service providers and owners of cables to take immediate measures to see that their cables don’t cause any inconvenience to the public. “Smart roads like Abraham Madamackal Road, Shanmugham Road, Banerji Road, Park Avenue Road and Durbar Hall Road have cable ducts. So, cables should be drawn through cable ducts on such roads. All cables drawn through electric poles and BSNL poles on these roads will be removed,” Anilkumar said. “On the roads in Smart City areas, all cables should be drawn as aerial bunched cables through poles. This should be done within three months,” he said, adding that all cables below five metres on all other roads will be removed.

It is following severe criticism regarding the failure of the authorities in removing dangling cables that the mayor convened the meeting.

At the same time, KSEB and BSNL authorities are not taking any step to remove the cables which are drawn through their poles. It is through electric posts and poles erected by BSNL decades ago that the cables are being drawn. Many accidents have occurred after the dangling cables get trapped on vehicles and motorists. On many by-lanes, the cobwebs of cables make the movement of firefighting vehicles difficult.

If the telecom service providers and other cable operators remove their redundant cables, around 90% of the cables in the city can be avoided. When a cable gets damaged, its operator will draw another cable without removing the damaged one.
