Kobe Bryant's daughter Gianna made NBA legend fall in love with basketball again

Basketball legend Kobe Bryant revealed in an interview earlier this month that his daughter Gianna had helped him rekindle his love for the sport.

Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter died on Sunday when the private helicopter they were travelling in came down and burst into flames.

Seven other people also lost their lives in the tragedy, and tributes are being paid all around the world.

Bryant retired from professional basketball in 2016 after a 20-year career, but speaking on the Showtime Basketball podcast All the Smoke at the start of January he admitted he rarely watched games until his daughter began playing.

"Before Gigi got into basketball, I hardly watched it, but now that she's into basketball, we watch every night," Bryant said.

The two were often seen together at LA Lakers games, and Bryant described how much he enjoyed attending with Gigi.

"We just had so much fun because it was the first time I was seeing the game through her eyes," he continued. "It wasn't me sitting there as an athlete or a player or something like that... It was her- she was having such a good time."

Gigi had ambitions to play for the University of Connecticut, and Bryant revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in October 2018 how she responded when people said he should have a son to continue his legacy.

"The best thing that happens when we go out is fans come up to me and she'll be standing next to me, and they'll be like, 'man, you gotta have a boy, you and V gotta have a boy, have someone carry on your tradition, your legacy," Bryant said.

"And she's like, 'Oi. I got this. Don't need no boy for that, I got this.'"

Thousands of people gathered outside the Lakers' Staples Centre to pay their respects, with many laying down flowers and items of memorabilia.
