Kobe Bryant helicopter plummeted for one minute before fatal crash

The helicopter which claimed the life of Kobe Bryant plummeted for a minute before it crashed into a hill in Calabasas, California.

Bryant was one of nine people killed in the tragic accident on Sunday morning.

The former NBA basketball star's daughter Gianna, 13, was also on board the Sikorski S-76B chopper.

National Transportation Safety Board officials said the helicopter dived towards the ground and failed to clear the hillside by 20-30 feet, reports Daily News.

The passengers were en route to Camarillo Airport and then onto the Mamba Sports Academy in Newbury Park, when the aircraft crashed around 9:45am.

Ronna Leavitt lives near to the crash site, and claims her Google Nest camera captured audio of the helicopter in a 43-second clip.

As reported by the New York Post, a loud thump can be heard three seconds before the end of the clip, followed by silence, believed to be when the helicopter crashed.

The chopper did not have a Terrain Awareness and Warning System, which would have alerted the pilot to the hillside, despite the NTSB advising the Federal Aviation Administration that all similar aircraft be fitted with the equipment.

Pilot Ara Zobayan appeared to make a "panic climb" at a rate of 1,406 feet per minute, around 30 seconds before Air Traffic Control lost contact.

Foggy conditions meant the Sikorsky was operating under “special visual flight rules," which allows flying in adverse weather.

It was forced to circle for around 15 minutes while the flight path was cleared by controllers, before it went down and burst into flames on impact.

Bryant and the rest of the passengers have now been formally identified after their bodies were removed from the crash site.

The coroner's office named the other six on board as husband and wife John and Keri Altobelli with their 13-year-old daughter Alyssa; Sarah Chester and and her 13-year-old daughter Payton; and basketball coach and mum Christina Mauser.

A report is due to be issued in 10 days time, while further analysis on why the helicopter plummeted will be released in around 12-18 months.
