Kobbie Mainoo shares message after signing new Manchester United contract

Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo has expressed his delight after putting pen to paper on a new long-term contract at Old Trafford.

The 17-year-old, who made his senior debut for the club during last month's 3-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Charlton Athletic, is highly rated by those inside Old Trafford, hence why manager Erik ten Hag has already awarded him with two first-team opportunities this season. After making his debut against the League One Addicks, he also stepped off the bench in the second half of the 3-1 win over Reading in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Stockport-born midfielder, who joined United at the age of nine, has developed at a rapid rate of knots, so much so that he is now considered to be ahead of fellow youngster Zidane Iqbal in the pecking order. Iqbal was the breakout star of United's pre-season tour last summer, starring in both Thailand and Australia, but has failed to make a single appearance this term.

Considering Mainoo only played for the Under-21s a handful of times last season, his graduation to the first-team squad has come at lightning speed. Nevertheless, the youngster is delighted to have committed his future to the Reds and has vowed to continue working hard.

"Amazing few weeks for me and my family," Mainoo said, posting on his Instagram page. "Really pleased to sign a long-term contract with this special club. Continuing to work hard and taking everything step by step."

Mainoo, who played a key role in helping United win the FA Youth Cup last season, starting all six matches, is highly thought of by Reds manager Erik ten Hag, who had no hesitation about awarding him his senior debut last month.

"For him it's a great opportunity, he did very well during the winter camp in Spain," said Ten Hag, speaking ahead of the win over Charlton. "He also did very well against Everton in a friendly. He deserved to play, so I'm happy to give him the opportunity.
