Knowsley coronavirus infections drop but hospitals are struggling

There are hopes that Knowsley’s third wave infection levels may have peaked after a number of day on day drops in the number of new infections.

Cases levels have started to show falls after a number of weeks of rocketing numbers after Christmas.

The seven-day infection rate for Knowsley, the highest in the Liverpool City Region, fell from 1,470 to 1,179 per 100,000 people between January 8 and January 11.

However, despite the good news on infection numbers, pressure on healthcare services in the borough continue.

Earlier this week, Whiston Hospital confirmed that it was treating more Covid patients than ever before.

St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed that as of, January 13, 168 inpatients are being treated for the effects of COVID-19 at Whiston Hospital.

The highest number of inpatients, in April 2020, was 153.

In addition, the delay in higher case numbers transferring to pressure on hospitals means that the peak is likely to not yet have reached healthcare services in the borough.

Despite the decrease, case levels remain high – and major employers have been affected by outbreaks.

Jaguar Land Rover, based in Halewood, had reported 22 of cases earlier this week, according to employees who spoke with the ECHO.

Visiting a vaccination centre in Kirkby earlier this week, council cabinet member for health and social care Sean Donnelly encouraged anyone offered the vaccine to take it up as soon as possible.

Councillor Donnelly said: “It was great to visit our 2 nd borough wide vaccination centre in Kirkby and see how well organised the whole operation is.

“Everyone working at the centre is playing a huge role in Knowsley’s fight against COVID-19, ensuring that our most vulnerable residents are protected and that our key workers are safe. I would like to thank them all.

“The COVID-19 vaccination is our route out of this pandemic, and it is only when people are protected from the virus that we can start to return to normal life. That is why I urge everyone to get vaccinated when they are contacted to do so.”
