Knowing personalities is key thing Texans seek in combine interviews

Combine interviews — just the phrase connotes a serious environment where NFL teams will talk about film and schemes with college prospects in Indianapolis.

However, Houston Texans general manager Brian Gaine explained Thursday at the combine the number one thing they try to get out of these interviews with the sundry prospects.

“Number one, you get to know their personalities,” Gaine said. “When you’re watching film and you’re just watching football, you’re just seeing them play the game.

“But you get to face up with the players, you get to know their personality, look them in the eye, hear them talk about their family, hear them talk about their football knowledge, their general intelligence, how they communicate, how they interact with the head coach, how they interact with the general manager and staff, how they handle themselves.”

The Texans have done a good job in the Bill O’Brien era of selecting players who weren’t locker room problems for the club. Of course, Gaine was a member of the front office originally from 2014-16 before taking a job in Buffalo in 2017. Houston has done well during the combine evaluations.

“It gleans a lot of personal character, a lot of football character,” Gaine said.

The Texans have holes to fill along the offensive line, in the secondary, and possibly at running back. While they are pursuing the talent, Houston also wants to bring in the right kind of player who will be a stable presence in the locker room.
