Knockbracken Driving Range faces uncertain future

There is uncertainty over the future of a Belfast driving range as it has not reopened since restrictions were lifted.

The Knockbracken Driving Range, Ballymaconaghy Road, South Belfast had been one of the longest running in Northern Ireland.

Golfers from across Belfast will have taken some of their first swings at the range, which also had a popular pool and snooker hall, but its doors have been closed since before Christmas.

Those working at the nearby Mount Ober Footgolf said they regularly have people enquiring about whether or not the driving range is open but they are unsure about what is happening with it.

They explained: "The driving range closed before Christmas and has not seemed to reopen.

"We regularly have people driving up and asking about it but we don't know what is going on with it."

Knockbracken gold pro Wesley Ramsay, who has been maintaining the facility, said a planning application had been submitted for houses on the site which also included the relocation of the range, but he was unaware of how this development is progressing.

He added: "It is frustrating that the driving range has been closed since before Christmas because it had been really going well and was very well used before we had to shut due to coronavirus>Covid.

"I have received plenty of enquiries about it, with people wanting to use it and lease it out but I am not sure what is going on at the moment.

"I am currently looking after the range and making sure that it stays in a good condition, but I feel like we are in limbo waiting to find out about its future.

"The driving range has been here a long time and people would come from all over Belfast. It is also a huge loss of resource for the golfers here in this part of the city because there is nothing similar to this nearby."

Alliance councillor Michelle Guy has been engaging with local residents regarding plans for housing on the driving range site and said the loss of the facility has been a big blow to the Four Winds area of the city.

She said: "The closure of the driving range, one of the only leisure facilities in the area, has been a real blow to the Four Winds community. The manner in which it happened was also hugely disrespectful to loyal and long serving employees of the facility.

"I urge the owner of the land to honour commitments made to redevelop the site to create a nine-hole golf course and relocate the driving range."
