Knockaert, Ioannou, Guerrero - Your Nottingham Forest transfer questions answered

Nottingham Forest started the new year by making it five games unbeaten at Preston North End, while the transfer rumour mill is beginning to crank up now the January window has opened.

And with that in mind, Reds reporter Sarah Clapson held a live webchat, answering supporters' questions and responding to their comments.

There was plenty to talk about, as ever!

Here's how it panned out.

The Garibaldi Red Podcast assesses which Forest players could leave the club in January

Q: Wondering how the new immigration points system will affect transfers? Sounds as though West Brom's activity has been affected will ours be too?

A: Good question. Longer term suspect it might have an impact, but not sure it will make too much difference in this window.

Forest not looking to make too many signings in January - priority is to cut numbers - so don't think it will impact them hugely this month.

Might mean that youngsters from the club get more of a chance, if it does become more difficult to bring in players from abroad.

Fortunately, Forest a very well set on that front. Incredible how they keep bringing talented young players through the ranks.

Q: Do you think we will see Grosicki arrive soon? Sounds like Allardyce has sanctioned him leaving WBA now.

A: Certainly hope it doesn't get left until the last minute again!

He's very much stayed on their radar since the summer, and Hughton says he remains a 'consideration'.

Think there's every chance Forest will try again for him. Seems like he's someone Hughton really likes.

And they do need to strengthen in that area.

Change in manager doesn't seem to have made a difference to Grosicki's situation at West Brom, so shouldn't be any obstacles there.

Don't think anything will happen for a while, though.

Hughton wasn't expecting any business to get done before Saturday's game.

Q: Who is leaving? Apart from the obvious in Hefele/Clough, what about Blackett, Bachirou, Diallo who've hardly played? Any from the 25 man squad? Ioannou /Grabban/Figueiredo /Knockaert? Any surprise exits?

A: Think Darikwa could go, give he's out of contract in the summer and not been part of the picture.

Hefele and Clough are certainly free to move on, although easier said than done, given that's been the case for the last few windows.

Expect Forest will have their resolve tested over Worrall.

Like to think he'll still be at the club come the end of the window, but you just never know if Burnley try their luck with silly money - particularly now their takeover has gone through.

Actually think Grabban will stay. Hughton sounded confident he wouldn't be going anywhere, when he was asked about it on Saturday.

He's a key player and clearly first-choice striker.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if Ioannou goes.

Ribeiro's first-choice left-back now, and Forest have Bong and Blackett as back-up.

Sounds like there's a bit of interest in Ioannou, so could be a simple way to cut numbers in that department.

Thought he looked good when he first came in, but has dropped down the pecking order.

Knockaert's going to be an interesting one. I think Forest will try to get him back on loan, if they can. Rather than take up the option to buy.

He's not exactly pulled up any trees but has got better as the season has gone on.

Think there's more to come from him, which probably counts in his favour. If Hughton thinks he can get the best out of him in the next few months, he'd be worth getting back, for me.

Q: Interest in Guerrero also?

A: I'd probably keep Guerrero, I think. Gives a different option.

Not going to score loads of goals, but offers something a bit different.

Thought him and Taylor worked well when they played together.

Suspect Guerrero's position may in part depend on what business Forest do in terms of signings. If they think they can strengthen sufficiently from an attacking perspective, probably be more willing to let him go.

Q: Keeping Bong and Blackett over a young Ioannou with loads of potential seems crazy to me.

A: Hughton's worked with Bong previously and seemed to get the best out of him at Brighton.

He seems to favour experienced players and ones he knows a bit about - which is understandable given the position in the table.

If you're down at the bottom end of the table, it's more likely you'll put your trust in someone who has done well for you in the past.

And with cutting numbers a priority, if there's interest in a fringe player (as Ioannou is), think that would be difficult to turn down.

Thought he did well early on, but for me, he's not miles enough in front of any of the other left-backs to warrant hanging on to him - not if there's a club interested.

Q: If Grabban stays, would like to see him played behind Taylor up front. He's actually decent outside the box, both coming short and also wide. But rubbish at holding the ball up from passes from deep. Taylor much better at that, also more of a physical presence in the penalty area. Grabban arriving in the box at speed would be a bonus. Thoughts?

A: Interesting take. I'd definitely like to see the two of them play together more. I'd be tempted to swap those roles around, though.

At the minute, Grabban isn't getting in the box anywhere near enough - largely because he's having to drop deep just to get involved in the game.

But if you have him in there and have people setting up chances for him, he's likely to put at least one of them away.

Taylor's also got a bit more energy and fresh legs about him, to do more of the running.

Q: Ryan Yates does get into the box but finishing is a bit wayward.

A: Yates could almost be in double figures by now if he could get a header on target or be a bit sharper in front of goal!

He's getting into the right positions, though.

Sure a goal will come for him.

Q: Is Bachirou more of a holding midfield player? Might he get a chance soon if fit?

A: When he signed, Bachirou was described to us as a high-energy, box-to-box midfielder.

Someone with an all-action style.

Not sure he's got a great deal of pace about him, but reports from Sweden said he was very good on the ball and a great tackler.

Shame we've not really seen enough of him to make a judgement.

Hopefully he gets a chance now he's back from injury. Could be one for Saturday maybe.

Expect Hughton will use the FA Cup game to give some players who haven't played much a runout.

As for being better than Yates in front of goal.... not sure his record suggests that!

Q: Would love it Sat if we played 4-4-2 with Mighten and Taylor up front, keep Grabban in cotton wool as can’t afford him getting injured - just to see a change of formation and if we can play to it.

A: I'd be tempted to rest Grabban on Saturday and start Taylor - maybe even with Guerrero.

Taylor could do with a game.

You're right, definitely best to wrap Grabban in cotton wool!

Think you could be right about Mighten perhaps starting as well, although not sure Hughton will change to the 4-4-2.

The 4-2-3-1 has been working allright in the last few games, so don't see there's any need to change it.

I'd play Lolley and Mighten on the wings on Saturday.

Q: Lolley fit?

A: Thought Lolley was unlucky not to start at Preston as he looked really good when he came on at Stoke.

Not heard anything to suggest he isn't fully fit. He said himself a few weeks ago that his injury problems were behind him.

He's just not quite found the best form, so others have started ahead of him.

Has looked more like it from off the bench in the last two games though, so I'd start him against Cardiff.

Also with Knockaert's loan being up, there's going to be at least one change to the XI.

Thought Ameobi looked tired on Saturday, so a chance to rest him.

Q: Be a bonus if Lolley got his form back of beginning of last season.

A: Absolutely. On his day, Lolley one of the best in the league.

Can still add a lot even when he's not weighing in with goals and assists, but Lolley at his destructive best is such a big asset.

He's not lost that quality, just needs to find a bit of form.

He's not the only one who's been below par this season.

Q: Be interesting to see if fringe players can show reason to stay in the team after Saturday.

A: Definitely. It's a chance for some of them to stake a claim, for sure. Would guess we might see the likes of Will Swan involved as well, although probably from off the bench.

Re Lolley, also think it's partly to do with confidence. When he was flying a couple of years ago, he was riding the crest of a wave. Just doesn't seem to show the same kind of conviction when he gets the ball at the moment. His injury problems definitely didn't help.

He's also someone who feeds off the crowd. Cyrus Christie mentioned it last week, but Forest have players in the team who want to entertain the fans. When there isn't a crowd there, they don't have the same kind of adrenaline.

Easy to say that it's the same for everybody and they're paid to just get on with it, but those kind of situations have a different effect on different people.

Still think Lolley can come good.

When the rest of the team isn't doing so well, it tends to rub off on people as well. Everyone gets dragged down.

Lincoln City's Brennan Johnson scores his side's third goal of the game (PA)

Q: Do you think CH will bring BJ back from Lincoln or leave him there to develop further?

A: Gut feeling on Brennan is he'll stay at Lincoln. Just seems to be the impression Hughton has given when we've asked about him.

He's aware that there's no point bringing him back if he's not going to play.

And at the minute, even with Brennan's form and the way Forest are playing, I just don't think he'd go straight into the team.

Mentioned it before, but Hughton seems to favour experienced players.

When you're in a relegation battle, can see the logic behind not bringing a young player back from a club where he's doing well.

As for any of the other loan players, asked Hughton that very question the other week - he said Brennan was the only one they are really looking at.

Seems they're happy with how the others are doing.

Jake Taylor has been recalled from Scunthorpe, but that's more to do with the fact his contract is up in the summer and seems likely he'll head elsewhere on a permanent deal.

Q: Problem with 4-2-3-1 were always short on chances made inside box. With long ball up in air to forwards I want to see us putting balls through the channels for our forwards to run onto for a change.

A: For me, it's more about the quality of the final ball. Forest could play any formation, but if the final pass isn't there, it's not going to matter.

Think 4-2-3-1 can be effective. Would like to see a 4-3-3 given a chance.

But ultimately counts for little how they set up, if they don't use the ball effectively.

Had so much possession on Saturday and put in no end of crosses, but barely tested the goalkeeper.

Not a new problem by any means, but one they still need to find a way of solving.
