KORIYAMA, Fukushima Prefecture -- Artist Eiko Kibune is using a gallery set up in her home to display her knit works of art. Based on the theme "Bonds of mothers and children," the pieces depict families' daily life.
Visitors to the gallery in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, can interact with the works of art as they would stuffed animals.
Kibune, 66, had her home and gallery built in 2015 after her previous home was destroyed in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Her gallery has become a gathering place for those evacuated to Koriyama.
After listening to mothers talk about their feelings for their children or anxieties about their future, she began producing the knit works of art.
"I want to encourage mothers," Kibune said.
Using the kanji characters for "love" (ai) and "knitting" (amu), Kibune calls the series of 32 works "I Am Art."
